The proposed $350 million buyout announced in the first half April,2006 by Linux distributor Red Hat, Inc., of Java middleware maker JBoss, Inc. is seen by analysts as the first major consolidation initiative in the open source software realm that has potential to challenge the might of software giants like Microsoft and Sun Microsystems.

They admit the cash and stock deal has fallacies — The $350 million Red Hat is paying for JBoss ($420 million if JBoss hits all revenue targets) is higher than Red Hat’s $278 million in revenue for the fiscal ended 28 February.…

It has been over a year since UTI Bank set up its call center that handles over 7,000 calls per day. The bank was looking for a robust platform that could guarantee it “high availability of services and uninterrupted call traffic”. It had options but finally decided on Linux for its core business applications.

PTI has reported that an Indian researcher, Bangalore-based, Debasis Mohanty,
has cracked the so-called impregnable Windows Genuine Advantage of Microsoft.

According to report, he broke WGA through an “easy-to-exploit” flaw in the software for
generating illegal copies of the Windows XP program.

WGA is an anti-piracy program that keeps an eye on consumers whether they are
running legitimately licensed copies of Windows XP.

Microsoft confirmed Mohanty’s success at cracking the WGA, yet, the world’s leading software manufacturer tried to downplay it saying, “It represents very little threat.”…

Computer giant Apple has won the first stage of its legal battle to force three online reporters/bloggers including a teenage boy, to reveal who gave them secret information about the company’s new products.

The company launched the fight in December last year after details of a new product – codenamed ”Asteroid” – appeared on a number of websites before they had been announced by Apple.

The teen web editor had claimed he was covered by laws that grant journalists the constitutional right to protect their sources.…

IBM announced an agreement with Zend Technologies to develop the industry’s first integrated solution designed to help developers build and deploy applications and services based on the popular PHP Web language. The new solution integrates IBM’s Cloudscapedatabase based on Apache Software Foundation Derby and Zend’s open source PHP environment. This agreement further expands IBM’s investment in open source by helping developers more effectively create applications based on the technology of their choice.

Under the agreement, IBM will work with Zend, the leading provider of products and services for developing, deploying and managing business-critical PHP applications, to create ‘Zend Core for IBM.’…
